This month's signals

Some of the latest questions from viewers of scam-awareness channels:

  • Viewers ask what happens after they report, and whether reporting a scam advert achieves anything. The Report and Recover Atlas answers both, including regulator routes for scam adverts.
  • "Already paid? Can I get it back?" is the most common question under bank-refusal videos. Refund rules differ by country and by payment type, and the Atlas sets them out.
  • Viewers forward scam videos to parents and grandparents. Each playbook has a large-print handout to share alongside the video.
  • Searches outside English are rising fast: Vietnamese searches for the scam-compound story rose 489% in a month, Brazil's "fim das bets" (end of the betting sites) rose 1,334%, and "money code" in India rose 597%. The Specimen Vault includes messages in nine languages besides English.
  • Old or unsourced figures get called out in comments. Every Data Desk figure carries its issuing body, date and link.

Some of the latest official warnings, each with an angle for a video:

  • Fake prize calls that use a charity’s name. On 26 October 2026 the US Federal Trade Commission warned of callers who say you won a prize because you gave to a charity, sometimes with a real charity’s name on the caller ID.   • “Your phone number will be cut off.” On 22 October 2026 the Federal Trade Commission warned of callers posing as its staff, who pass the victim to a fake police officer, demand secrecy and then ask for a “security deposit”.   • Health insurance sign-up season. US open enrolment runs from 1 November 2026 to 15 January 2027. On 29 October 2026 the Federal Trade Commission warned of adverts and robocalls selling discount cards as if they were insurance, or posing as the government.   • Election week. On 16 October 2026 the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned that election officials and campaigns are being targeted with AI-written emails and texts and with deepfake audio and video, and on 15 October it listed the election crimes voters can report.
