Can I afford this?

Before a loan, a credit card, buy now pay later or a big purchase, see what it really costs, what one missed payment does, and what your pay can carry.

The short answer. To find out whether you can afford a loan, credit card or buy-now-pay-later plan, work out the total it will cost and what one missed payment does. Enter the details here and this page shows both, and how long a card takes to clear. It links to free debt help where you live. The sums happen on your device, and the result is information, not financial advice.

How it works, in four steps

  1. Paste or chooseType in the loan, card, pay-later plan or purchase, and your pay.
  2. The check runs on your own phone or computerWhat you add stays on your device, and the page keeps working with the internet off.
  3. Read what it found and what to do nextSee the full cost, every payment and its date, and what one missed payment does.
  4. What this check cannot doThe figures are estimates, not financial advice: every lender works out interest in its own way, so check the lender’s own figures before you sign.

Questions people ask

Who made this?

UtilForge makes it. UtilForge is a website of free cybersecurity tools. The About page explains why the tools were made, and the Contact page is the way to reach us.

Is this a scam site?

You do not have to take our word for it, because you can check. This page does not ask for payment, a sign-in or card details. It is set so that your browser stops the page sending anything off your phone or computer, and you can test that: let the page finish loading, switch the internet off, then use it. It keeps working, because it has nowhere to send anything. If you are still unsure about any website, do not type anything private into it. UtilForge also sells optional packs of tools through Gumroad, and nothing on this page needs one.

What happens when I close the page?

The amounts you typed are gone. It saves nothing in your browser and puts nothing in the web address of the page. The page has no save or download button, so it leaves no file on your device.

Does it cost anything, and do I need to sign in?

It is free, and you can start straight away. UtilForge also sells optional packs of tools through Gumroad, and nothing on this page needs one.

What can this page work out?

What a loan really costs in total, what one missed buy-now-pay-later payment does, how long a credit card takes to pay off, how to plan your pay around your bills, and how to pay off several debts faster by clearing the smallest first or the highest rate first. It also links to free help if money is tight.

Are the sums exact?

No. The sums are estimates to help you decide. They are not financial advice, and every lender works out interest in its own way, so check the lender's own figures before you sign.

What happens if I miss a buy-now-pay-later payment?

Most pay-later plans charge no interest, but most do charge late fees, so read the plan's own terms. If the payment is taken automatically and your account is short, your bank may also charge you. Missed payments can be reported to credit agencies and lower your credit score, the account can be passed to a debt collector, and the company can stop you using it until you catch up.

A lender wants a fee before I get the loan. Is that normal?

The page names it as a common scam sign: a lender that wants money first, for insurance, admin or processing, before paying out the loan. Check the offer with Before You Invest.
